On the 2nd of July, Matera, European Capital of Culture in 2019, celebrates the festival of the Madonna della Bruna. It is a special day, which begins at the first light of dawn with the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the alleys of the oldest parts of the city centre, but it is in the evening that the most traditional and passionate moment arrives: the statue is placed on a large papier-mâché float which, after having paraded through the streets of the city, is attacked and destroyed with great fervour by the participants in the ceremony. Whoever succeeds in obtaining a piece of the float will be able to take it to their home, which will bring them good luck!
